Who pays for crime scene cleanup?

There is no single answer for every property. Payment can fall to the property owner or another responsible party, and some homeowners, renters or commercial policies may provide coverage depending on the event, exclusions, limits and carrier decision.

What should you ask the insurer?

Ask whether the policy includes coverage for biohazard remediation, trauma-scene cleanup, blood cleanup, unattended death or decomposition. Request the claim number and instructions for documentation before discarding records that may be needed.

What should you ask the cleanup company?

Ask for a defined scope, what is included, what could change the estimate and what documentation will be available for the client or carrier.
